Treat yourself to a New Career

We spend most of our day working at our jobs.  If we don't like the job, then it can often feel like drudgery going there, coming home, and dreading going back the next day.  It can drag us down if we let it.  If you want to devise a way out, first you must determine if it is your job you dislike or your career.  Once you've got that figured out, you can move forward.

Before you quit your job so you can enroll in school, you have to figure out if you hate your job or your career. This involves careful evaluation of your current job. Ask yourself a few questions:  Do I like the people I work with?  Do I hate my boss?  Do I feel I am underpaid?  Do I get enjoyment out of the actual work I do?  This is important because it may not be a career change that you need, you may just need a change of employment. Often when people strip away the things they don't like about their job they find that they actually like what they do.  They just feel undervalued, or don't thrive in the environment they are working in.

If you determine that you actually enjoy doing your current work, then you'll likely have some decisions to make.  Probably you will need to change your working environment and search for a similar position with another company.  It would be a good idea to also consider extra training in order to advance in your current field of choice.

There may be another job in your current field of employment that better suits your personality.  If you can find a position similar to your current one, but for which you are better suited, then you will be happier.  If you have broken everything down and you have determined that you just don't enjoy your current job, most likely you will need a career change. Career changes don't have to be scary.

Think about the things that you like and the things that you're good at.  Put them on paper with two columns and put their opposites in the second column.  This exercise can provide some eye opening results.  Visit a career counselor for some help, and do some internet research.  There are even free online aptitude tests you can take to help you determine which direction you want to go.  But most importantly, do what is best for you and don't stay in a position that is not productive for you.
